Calgarians have several options to honour the second annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, or Orange Shirt Day.
The City of Calgary is hosting a ceremony at Fort Calgary at 10 a.m., “to commemorate residential school victims, honour survivors and their families, and commit to acting on reconciliation.”
You can watch the city’s livestream of the ceremony here.
Calgarians are encouraged to wear an orange shirt from a local Indigenous vendor.
The city is also lighting Olympic Plaza, TELUS Spark Science Centre, Reconciliation Bridge, and the Calgary Tower orange, and all flags at city buildings will be lowered to half-mast on Friday to mark the day.
The Calgary Foundation is also hosting several events around the city, which you can learn more about here.
The University of Calgary is hosting multiple events including a flag-lowering ceremony, a panel discussion, and a film screening at various times throughout the day. You can learn more about the events here.
Mount Royal University is also hosting multiple events, including a march, a walking tour, and a gifting ceremony. You can learn more here.
You can take part in the fourth annual Orange Shirt Day Walk at 9:30 a.m. at Prince’s Island Park, or a walking tour at Fort Calgary at 2 p.m.
You can also head to the Saddledome for the Every Child Matters: Traditional Powwow at 6 p.m.
