Calgary’s average gas prices high: GasBuddy

Gas prices are once again high in Calgary, rising about 10 cents per litre of regular since last week according to GasBuddy.

Callers tell CityNews some local stations are selling fuel for as high as $1.73 per litre.

The price increases come days after the province reinstated a portion of its fuel tax, however, it’s unlikely the 4.5 cents per litre tax is driving prices up to this degree.

A statement from the government Monday says the recent increases in gas prices are due to “a series of unexpected disruptions at refineries on the west coast and in the Great Lakes region, as well as the plains states in the U.S., including fires and maintenance delays.”

“These disruptions have impacted mostly western provinces in Canada. Manitoba and British Columbia have been impacted the most, with an average gasoline price jump of between 15 and 45 cents a litre over the past week.”

As of Wednesday morning, GasBuddy recorded Calgary’s average gas price as $1.64 per litre of regular. Average prices were recorded at $1.54 a litre a week ago and $1.41 a litre one month ago.

When the province announced on Sept. 21 it would be bringing back some taxes on fuel, average prices in Calgary were near $1.40 per litre.
