Alberta RCMP charge High Prairie day home operator in infant murder

A High Prairie day home operator is facing second-degree murder charges in the death of a 7-month-old infant in early October.

Officers say it happened on Oct. 6 at around 4:30 p.m. at a day home the suspect ran.

An autopsy was conducted on Oct. 11, and investigators determined the death to be a homicide.

Twenty-nine-year-old Kyra Renee Backs was charged on Oct. 15, with the second-degree murder of infant Oakland Cunningham.

Police say the suspect was taken into pretrial custody, and say she will appear in High Prairie Provincial Court on Oct. 24.

RCMP say no more information will be released since the matter is now with the courts.
