Calgary changing snow clearing response as winter approaches

The City of Calgary is changing the way it handles clearing snow from “priority” routes this winter.
The city says its goal is to have major roadways and frequently used routes clear within 36 hours.
“These enhanced service levels mean that we’ll be completing our snow operations on priority routes faster to improve safety and mobility for Calgarians,” Chris Hewitt, Manager of Mobility Maintenance said. “Our goal is to keep those major routes moving safely during and after snowfall.”
Under the previous plan, the city aimed to clear those roads — prioritized by how much traffic they get — in 48 hours.
“We work to maintain good driving conditions on our major routes and want to provide a safe commute for all Calgarians,” Hewitt said. “We want to remind citizens that winter weather can happen at any time. Our crews work 24/7 through the winter months to ensure we can respond to the snow and ice.”
The city is also increasing funding to keep pedestrian routes like sidewalks, pathways, and transit stops clear of snow within 24 hours.
Other parts of the city’s snow-clearing plan remain the same — after major routes are cleared, crews will move on to plow and shovel residential neighbourhoods, then prepare for the next snowfall.
