Cool temperatures, snow forecast for Calgary, ending weeks of warm weather

After weeks of unseasonably warm weather, Calgary is bracing itself for cool temperatures and snow in some parts of the city.

CityNews meteorologist Michael Kuss says it’s a drastic shift in conditions compared to just days ago.

“It could be 25 degrees colder on Saturday than it was on Wednesday, that’s the type of turnaround we’re seeing,” Kuss said. “The arctic air is plunging in — of course, it’s about time, but, it’s coming pretty dramatically. A trough stretches up the Rockies from a low in Montana, and that has the potential to bring at least some light snow, especially on Saturday — a couple of centimetres minimum in the forecast.”

Kuss likens the stark contrast in temperatures to skipping the season of fall, going straight from summer weather to winter weather in a matter of days.

“[There will be] snow in the Foothills so be careful when travelling this weekend,” he said. “Winter driving conditions are developing, and we could see some of that right around the city over the next 48+ hours.”

While snow won’t be falling in droves, Calgary is expecting some precipitation in the coming days. Some snow on the ground before Halloween is by no means unusual according to Kuss, however, for the short term, he says you can expect a mix of rain and snow.

Environment and Climate Change Canada predicts a total of about four to six centimetres of snow to fall over Friday and Saturday, with a small chance of flurries extending to Sunday.
