Calgarians showcase solidarity for Mahsa Amini in human chain rally

On Oct. 29 there is a worldwide human chain being organized, including one Calgarians can participate in.

A human chain of protesters is set to lock arms in 140 cities around the world Saturday as part of a global day of action for Iran.

And you can be a link in a human chain in support of protests in Iran for Mahsa Amini, who was killed by Iran’s morality police for improperly wearing her hijab.

The event in Calgary gets underway at 2 p.m. at Edworthy park.

One of the organizers says the show of solidarity will be widespread and explains the purpose of the human chain.

“There is going to be I suspect over 100 cities around the world and all the major Canadian cities are planning a worldwide human chain trying to gather as much people as possible – Iranians and non-Iranians – to show a stand of solidarity with the people of Iran,” said Armin, media coordinator for the Calgary Iranian rallies and protests.

He says they’re trying out something new, as they’ve been holding rallies for the past few weeks.

But this time, they decided to host a human chain because there are certain events that are going on this week including the 40th day of the passing of Mahsa Amini.

He adds this past week has been one of mourning but also one of solidarity.

“Protesting for freedom, for life, and for all the women in Iran as well.”

But what is the human chain hoping to achieve?

He says the purpose of the human chain is to stand in solidarity with the people of Iran and to shed light on the crisis situation that’s happening there currently, especially the oppressive regime that has been going on there for 43 years.

He adds that the Iranian government has been killing and massacring people this past month.

“The overall end goal is to ask the federal government, alongside other countries around the world, is to label the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as an official terrorist organization which would include confiscating land, property and assets of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Armin said.

“It’s been known that Canada is one of the biggest harbour locations for the Islamic Republic.”

He adds it is important Calgarians continue to stand with the Iranian people throughout this ongoing revolution.
