‘Walking like a Penguin’: AHS shares tips to prevent falling on ice

November is Fall Prevention Month, and Alberta Health Services (AHS) is reminding people to pay attention while walking on ice, and giving some tips to prevent falls.

“As the weather gets colder, remember: If there’s ice below, take it slow,” said AHS in a tweet.

AHS adds people can avoid falls by walking “like a penguin,” even though it is not the fastest way.

“It’s all about balance,” AHS explains. “Our little tuxedo wearing friends are low and slow, and use their wings to help them steady as they shuffle about.”

Experts explain when it’s icy, people should point their feet outward, legs apart, and walk flat footed, taking short steps — just like a penguin.

They add people should use their arms for balance.

Unlike penguins, who don’t wear shoes, people should wear sturdy shoes with ankle support and slip resistance soles.

“If you have to carry stuff … grab a backpack so your arms are free to protect yourself, just in case you do slip and fall.” AHS added.

AHS says falling on ice leads to serious injuries, and in a period of 12 months they had 19,910 visits to emergency departments in the province.

“Tens of millions of penguins can’t be wrong,” AHS added. “Think safe. Walk like a penguin.”
