Remembrance Day 2022: Calgary ceremonies

Remembrance Day falls on a Friday this year.

In Calgary there are several ceremonies and events happening to mark the day in honour of those who served Canada.

Field of Crosses

Every year the Field of Crosses Memorial Project puts up 3,500 crosses in a park along Memorial Drive, near Sunnyside Bank Park.

An area of park is open and lit 24/7 from Nov. 1 to 12 so anyone can visit and pay their respects at any time.

Military Museums

The Military Museums, near Passchendaele Avenue SW and Amiens Crescent SW, just east of Crowchild Trail are holding their annual Remembrance Day ceremony on Nov. 11.

The ceremony, which will be livestreamed, begins at 10 a.m., and the museum will open to the public at noon.

You won’t need to book ahead to visit the museum Friday, however you’ll be asked to make a donation to get in.

The museum adds it will not be accepting food bank donations this year.

Central Memorial Park

Calgarians in the Beltline can visit the cenotaph at Central Memorial Park, between 12 Avenue SW/13 Avenue SW and 4 Street SW/2 Street SW, Friday.

Remembrance Day ceremonies are held in the park every year, which is also home to the Memorial Public Library.

Burnsland Cemetery

If you’d like to learn about the military history of Calgary, you can go on a guided tour of the Burnsland Cemetery, near Spiller Road SE and Cemetery Road SE.

The cemetery says it will focus on the people who fought in World War I and World War II. It happens Friday from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

A free Remembrance Day ceremony is set for the Burnswest Theatre at Fort Calgary, on 9 Avenue SE just west of the Elbow River, Friday morning.

Cpl., Ret. Reverend Larry J. Nicolay, chaplain of the RCMP Veteran’s Association will deliver an address and lead a prayer. The ceremony also includes a commemorative address from Sgt. Major, Ret. George Pambrum of the Métis Nation of Alberta.

Although the event is free, space is limited and anyone who wants to attend will need to register beforehand.

Battalion Park

The King’s Own Calgary Regiment will hold its annual ceremony at Battalion Park in the community of Signal Hill, just west of Sarcee Trail, beginning at 10:45 a.m. Nov. 11.

Fort Calgary is partnering with the RCMP Veterans’ Association to host a free Remembrance Day service starting at 10:15 a.m. Friday.

Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium

Southern Jubilee Auditorium celebrates 60 years in Calgary

The Royal Canadian Legion is hosting a Remembrance Day ceremony Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium on the SAIT campus.

Parking will be free and tickets will be available at the door.

Several other Legion branches across the city are also holding their own ceremonies. There are 10 Legion branches in Calgary, with 19 others in Airdrie, Okotoks, Cochrane, Crossfield, Turner Valley, Strathmore, High River, Carstairs, Cremona, Acme, Exshaw, Standard, Nanton, Carbon, Olds, Canmore, Vulcan, Three Hills, and Sundre.
