Calgary police officer charged with assault causing bodily harm

A Calgary police officer has been charged with assault causing bodily harm following an arrest while he was on duty.

Police say it happened on June 17, 2021, in the northeast community of Temple in a “call for service.”

Officers say they arrested a woman and took her in. However, before they could put her in the police vehicle, a fight broke out. The woman sustained injuries and was taken to hospital.

Thirty-one-year-old Jameson Kooistra has been charged with one count of bodily harm in this incident.

The Calgary Police Service has placed him on administrative duties and will review his status as appropriate. Kooistra has worked with CPS for three years.

Police don’t say the extent of her injuries. but that she died in a “non-criminal” manner in September. They add it was not a result of the injuries.

CPS says that “Officers are permitted to use reasonable and necessary force in the execution of their duties, but they can be charged if there are grounds to believe the force was excessive or not required at all.”

Calgary police say any police conduct in the province goes through the Criminal Code of Canada, and Alberta’s Police Act and Police Service Regulation.

“Criminal charges can be laid against officers in cases where the evidence supports it, and in consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service as appropriate. When criminal charges are laid, the court process for those charges must conclude before any internal discipline or dismissal can be considered,” police said in a statement.
