Calgary city council is finalizing its budget for the next four years.
The budget will reach $4.9 billion by the end of the fourth year.
Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek says the plan takes into consideration population growth and inflation.
“I think the story of this budget is that it’s been an involving process, and it’s been evolving because our world has been changing at a pace that we’ve never seen before. So many unpredicted things came at the last few years, and we’re doing our best to operate in that kind of environment,” Gondek said.
The budget calls for a property tax increase of 4.4 per cent next year, followed by an average tax increase of 3.7 per cent for the remaining years of the budget.
Gondek adds council has approved extra money from its reserve fund to support organizations that help vulnerable people.

Meanwhile, city councilor Evan Spencer says this budget is a balance of priorities, taking into consideration what matters for Calgarians.
“We’re balancing some pretty extreme priorities in terms of affordability, and then also in making investments in this community to make sure of where we wanna go,” Spencer said.
The City of Calgary started its council session on the proposed Calgary budget Monday.
