Traffic safety concerns in Calgary’s Crescent Heights

The Crescent Heights Community Association is looking for additional traffic safety measures on 1 Street NW. As Tate Laycraft reports, their specific concern lies outside Crescent Heights High School.

One month after a life-threatening hit and run in Calgary’s northwest neighbourhood of Crescent Heights, community members are speaking out about traffic safety.

Marie Semenick-Evans, a board member with the Crescent Heights Community Association, says more needs to be done to ensure the safety of drivers and pedestrians on 1 Street NW, especially near Crescent Heights High School.

“We felt that for many years that there wasn’t enough safety provisions and traffic calming around there,” Semenick-Evans said.

“Unfortunately, this recent incident has demonstrated that these limited provisions that were put in were not enough.”

In September 2021, the board addressed concerns with traffic calming outside Crescent Heights High School. In response, this fall the City of Calgary installed temporary curb extensions outside the school. Semenick-Evans says they were hoping for more.

“We definitely asked specifically for speed bumps on 9 Avenue NW, 1 Street NW, and 11 Avenue NW, and we had discussions about narrowing the roads by extending the boulevard for the school,” she said.

The city also conducted speed studies in September and October of 2021. The report found that most people travelling along the road actually moved below the speed limit.

“I guess our concern is, it doesn’t matter how many cars speed. It’s that cars can speed. And this last unfortunate incident highlights that,” Semenick-Evans said.

In a statement to CityNews, the Calgary Board of Education says traffic safety is a shared responsibility, adding that it takes the safety of students and staff very seriously.

CityNews has reached out to the City of Calgary for comment.
