UCalgary science students to take field trips from lab

The University of Calgary (UCalgary) is using innovative technology for its science students to take them into the field without the need to leave the lab.

The new innovative technology gives students a view of “our planet’s landscape.”

Adam Pidlisecky, associate professor at the Department of Geoscience at Calgary, says as they deploy the new technology, they are studying its effectiveness.

“What we’ve done this year is try to deploy this emerging mixed reality technology called the HoloLens 2 into the classroom, and a sort of rigorous study framework, so that we can kind of understand how students are working with it,” said Pidlisecky.

Meanwhile, Glenn Dolphin, associate professor at Department of Geoscience at UCalgary, adds their project uses mixed reality headsets to improve the experiences in the field that they may never have the opportunity to get.

Geology student Haidar Putri has been working with some professors and graduate students to develop content to bring the new invention into life.

“I’ve been working on this over the summer, for about four months … We’ve been really successful in deploying this in our first geology class, which targeted about over 400 geology students,” Putri said.
