Ice Advisory in place for Bow River in Calgary
Posted Dec 9, 2022 9:39 pm.
An ice advisory for the Bow River issued earlier this week is still in place after an ice jam caused minor flooding on low-lying pathways near the Calgary Zoo & Inglewood.
A freeze-up ice jam formed on the Bow River in the afternoon of December 7.
Rapidly changing temperatures caused a collapse of the new ice cover between the 12th Street N.E. bridge and the weir near Harvie Passage.
Local water levels rose about two metres as the ice cover consolidated, causing the flooding of pathways near the Calgary Zoo on the north bank, and in Inglewood along the south bank.
Some pathways remain closed as a result.
As of Friday, water levels have fallen approximately 40 cm from peak levels at the 12 Street N.E. bridge.
The city says the ice jam remains largely in place but is showing signs of breaking up.
The city will be monitoring ice conditions daily over the weekend and is conducting aerial drone observations.
If Calgarians notice any basement seepage or non-typical sump pump activity they’re asked to call 311.
Extra caution is advised for anyone taking part in activities near the ice jam, as the banks are icy, and water levels could fluctuate rapidly.
