‘Stop this evil’: Calgarians rally to show continued support for Ukraine

Calgarians are planning to rally Sunday at 2 p.m. to show their continued support for Ukraine.

The protest, led by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress Calgary branch, will begin at the St Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Sobor church.

“This is an event to remind that the war is again still not over and Ukrainians are protesting against war and power terrorism Russia commits in Ukraine,” said rally organizer Gulnar Majafova.  “Because a lot of Ukrainians there stay without power, without electricity, there is no heating, like in bomb shelters or wherever they are.

“Especially in winter when it gets cold people (are) staying without lights, heating, because it’s not warm, especially kids have to study and so on.”

Canada’s Ukrainian community is urging the federal government to provide Ukraine with support like air defence and weapons.

They are also calling for a full trade embargo on Russia.

“We are very thankful to Canada and Canadian people for all your support and everything you are doing for us… and also for letting us peacefully protest,” said Majafova.

“We nevertheless want to encourage all the people in the world to help to stop this evil, it’s very hard because Russia and their government are not going to stop, therefore we want our voice to be heard.”
