Calgary police asking people to celebrate New Year’s Eve responsibly

Calgary Police Service (CPS) is reminding people who are planning to celebrate New Year’s Eve outside to do so safely.
“As we say goodbye to 2022, please remember to celebrate #NewYearsEve safely,” CPS said in a tweet. “If you choose to drink alcohol or use drugs tonight, please ensure you have a safe ride home.

CPS says in a video posted on Twitter there are consequences for impaired driving.
“Consequences range from a provincial suspension of three days, up to criminal charges that can result in a lengthy suspension, and even jail time,” said Cst. Jason Van Dorp.

He adds they have increased their check stops to make sure people are not breaking the law.
“You may be called into a check stop, at which time you will have to provide a sample of breath for us to screen you for alcohol. We also are conducting drug impairment checks at those check stops,” he said.
