Calgary Co-op closing two locations

Calgary Co-op is shutting down two of its grocery stores in Beddington and Village Square on March 8.

A statement from the company says its gas station at Village Square, and its gas station, Wine Spirits Beer, and Cannabis locations in Beddington will stay open.

Co-op says it won’t be laying off any staff as a result of the closures, however.

“Our first concern is to assist our team members and our Calgary Co-op members through this transition. We are working closely with the union and our team members to ensure affected employees are supported. Our goal is to offer alternate roles in our organization to all affected team members if they choose,” the statement reads.

The company will let its customers know when they will be transferring pharmacy information to the next nearest Co-op location.

“While we never want to close a food store, we do need to make decisions that are in the best interest of our members. Unsustainable sales and increasingly difficult local economic and market conditions for these stores mean we need re-allocate resources to other, more sustainable locations,” Co-op said.

The company adds it’s going to invest in renovations at its North Hill and Oakridge locations as well as build a new store in Marda Loop.
