Pride flag burned outside Calgary middle school, CBE investigates

The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) is launching an investigation after a video surfaced showing someone burning a pride flag near a middle school on Friday.

According to the CBE, it happened near Senator Patrick Burns Middle School in northwest Calgary on Feb. 10.

The CBE says it’s taking the incident “very seriously” and is working directly with the school and the school’s resource officer.

No specific information will be released to protect the privacy of those involved, the school board said.

In a statement to CityNews, the CBE says it sent a letter to parents and guardians of the school on Feb. 13, saying it strives to be a “welcoming, caring, respectful and safe” for students to feel a sense of belonging.

“We recognize the harm that actions like this cause our students, staff and families. Behaviour like this is unacceptable and will not be tolerated at Senator Patrick Burns or any school within the CBE,” the letter to parents reads.

“We value inclusion and respect and encourage all our students to show Orgullo Bronco Pride at all times.”

It also says students and staff will be able to receive support and are encouraged to reach out to the school’s administration.
