Calgary toddler’s parents face manslaughter charges in his death

The parents of an 18-month-old Calgary toddler that died suspiciously in 2021 are facing manslaughter charges after a 16-month investigation.

Calgary police took thirty-year-old Sonya Pasqua and thirty-year-old Michael Sinclair into custody Thursday.

Investigators ruled the death a homicide.

On Friday, officers officially charged the couple and say the two will appear in court on Feb. 22.

In 2021, police received calls on Oct. 5, just after 11 a.m., about a toddler in distress.

Once they arrived, officers say the child, Gabriel Sinclair-Pasqua, was found unresponsive. He died on the scene.

“Investigating the death of a child is incredibly difficult on all first responders and police officers,” says S. Sgt Martin Schiavetta with the Calgary police.

“For the past 16 months, we have worked tirelessly to ensure that those responsible for Gabriel’s death were held accountable. Our deepest condolences go out to those who continue to grieve Gabriel’s loss.”
