71-year-old and pet die in Calgary SE fire

The Calgary Fire Department says a 71-year-old man and a pet died in a fire in the Penbrooke Meadows area early Friday morning.

Keith Stall, the on-duty battalion chief, says they received calls at around 3 a.m. for a fire on Penworth Way.

When they arrived, firefighters say three people managed to escape, though one is suffering from burns and smoke inhalation. EMS took the three to hospital.

“Our crews were able to make entry through a pretty significant fire coming from the basement,” Stall told CityNews.

“And the crews were able to bring the fire under control relatively quickly and on search of the rest of the home, unfortunately, also found a deceased pet.”

Once the fire was out, they found the man and pet inside.

Fire investigators say the damage is significant to both the basement and the upper level of the home, though it was contained in the home.

There is no word on the cause of the fire at this time as the investigation continues.
