Calgary’s Chris Sutter wins Special Olympics Alberta gold

Calgary celebrity Chris Sutter is celebrating a gold medal after the 2023 Special Olympics Alberta Winter Games. Tate Laycraft from CityNews has more.

As Special Olympics Canada prepares for a major announcement, one of Calgary’s biggest celebrities celebrates a gold medal win.

Chris Sutter, son of the Flames bench boss Darryl Sutter, is a Special Olympics Alberta gold medalist.

The Calgary Flames hype-man, widely known for his “Chris Sutter time” dance sessions, was part of the championship-winning Calgary Hurricanes.

Cheryl bernard, the co-chair of Special Olympics Canada Winter Games, says Sutter’s success helps shine a light on the games.

“When you watch Chris, you realize that sport is so much more than medals, even though he won a gold,” she said.

“Chris, as the face of Calgary and maybe potentially he’s going to be an athlete in the winter games, the national games in February 2024, I just think he’s the perfect person to showcase what sport is about.”

The floor hockey team’s big win comes as Special Olympics Alberta wraps up its winter games.

Meanwhile, Special Olympics Canada is preparing to reveal details for its 2024 Winter Games in Calgary.

“We get to announce the venues tomorrow, the sports which will be involved,” Bernard said.

“I hope ultimately that these games will influence inclusions of persons with intellectual disabilities into the workforce in Calgary.”

Looking to Chris Sutter’s floor hockey future, Special Olympics Alberta will announce their mid-march selections for the 2024 Winter Games.
