Alberta could bid for Commonwealth Games

Alberta is exploring a bid for the Commonwealth Games.

The mayors of Calgary and Edmonton are set to “officially launch an exploration process” on Wednesday. They are expected to be joined by various Alberta athletes, as well as Chief Roy Whitney of the Tsuut’ina Nation and the minister of culture.

That process will help the cities and province determine the feasibility of hosting the games in Alberta.

Edmonton hosted the sporting event in 1978. The last time Canada hosted the Commonwealth Games was in 1994 in Victoria, B.C.

The Commonwealth nations take part in the games, which are generally held every four years. In addition to these countries, some overseas territories, island states, and Crown dependencies also participate.

Wednesday’s announcement is set to be held in Calgary at 1 p.m. MT.
