Mayerthorpe man charged after dozens of trail cameras stolen: RCMP

A Mayerthorpe man has been charged after more than 100 research cameras were allegedly stolen from the Williams Creek area, with RCMP saying dozens were found at the suspect’s home.

Lonnie Darrel Roth has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime and mischief.

Mounties say 137 research trail cameras were stolen between October 2021 and March 2023.

On Oct. 18, 2021, Sundre RCMP say they were called by the Help Alberta Wildies Society after 10 research trail cameras were reportedly stolen from the Williams Creek area.

They were also called on Feb. 6 for a report of 30 cameras stolen. On March 6, 2022, they were again called, this time regarding an addition 43 camera thefts.

On March 6, 2023, a year later, Mounties say they received a complaint of 54 research trail cameras being stolen.

Three days later, police say they searched a home in Mayerthorpe and found 52 of the stolen cameras.

The accused is scheduled to appear in Mayerthorpe Provincial Court on May 11.

RCMP say the investigation is ongoing.
