Calgary Zoo celebrates National Peacock Day

Saturday is National Peacock Day and the Calgary Zoo is highlighting its seven peacocks.

The zoo took to Twitter to celebrate.

“Our seven peacocks are still keeping warm indoors, but they’ll be roaming zoo grounds again soon,” reads the tweet.

“We can’t wait to welcome ‘Norman’ and the rest of our muster back to the zoo grounds.”

The peacock is the male of the peafowl, while the female peafowl is referred to as peahen.

However, in everyday language, we refer to both genders as peacock.

Their tail feathers, also known as coverts, constitute more than 60 per cent of the peacock’s total body, spreading out in a distinctive train and boasting “eye” markings in many colours.

Their distinctive and large train is used in mating rituals and courtship displays.

There are three species of peacocks, two Asiatic and one African.

The two Asiatic species are the blue or Indian peafowl, and the green peafowl of Southeast Asia.

National Peacock Day celebrates the beauty of the bird species and all things related to it.
