Calgary Flames celebrate pride night with warm-up jerseys

The Calgary Flames Pride jerseys were designed by local artist, Megan Parker, and incorporates Alberta themes.

The Calgary Flames will celebrate pride night with special warm-up jerseys when they host the Los Angeles Kings Tuesday evening.

The Flames says the design incorporates flora and fauna found around Alberta, including the Wildrose, and based the pattern loosely on the colour pattern of the pride flag.

Local artist Megan Parker designed the jerseys, which will be available for auction in support of the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation (CSEC) Inclusion Program.

Flames Head Coach Darryl Sutter told reporters, “It looks pretty good.”

He says all Calgary players will be wearing them, explaining, “I don’t think it’s been a real issue for the team at all.”

This comes as a number of NHL players across the league have said they would not wear pride jerseys in warmups.

The Chicago Blackhawks decided against having players wear Pride-themed warmup jerseys for their upcoming Pride night, citing an anti-gay laws in Russia.

Eric and Marc Staal of the Florida Panthers also chose not to wear pride jerseys in warmups, while Sharks goaltender James Reimer also refused to participate in pride activities in San Jose, citing his religious beliefs.
