Calgary shooting sends 1 person to hospital: police

Another violent incident occurring on Calgary Transit Wednesday, with a man being sent to hospital with life-threatening injuries after being shot on a bus.

Calgary police say one man was taken to hospital after a shooting that happened in a bus in the downtown core.

EMS told CityNews the man is now in stable condition.

Police say they were called around 11:40 a.m. for reports of a fight taking place between multiple people with weapons and bear spray, ending with shooting and deploying bear spray on a city bus parked outside the Central Library on 3 Street SE.

They add it is believed the people involved in the fight knew each other from before.

According to police, the fight started when the bus was in motion, and when it escalated and the shooting happened, the driver stopped the bus.

Riders started performing life-saving measures to save the injured man’s life, officers say.

Police say the occupants of the bus, along with the suspects, ran away.

When police arrived at the scene, they started looking for the suspects, where they searched a nearby restaurant, but did not find anyone.

They then arrested two suspects on 9 Avenue SE near Fort Calgary. One suspect is believed to be still outstanding.

Meanwhile, the union representing transit drivers in Calgary says the driver was shaken up, as he was affected by the bear spray.

“He had gotten exposed to whatever the spray was that was there…pepper spray, bear spray…And so he had that in his eyes and his lungs…they did treat him for that. Physically things have settled down for him right now,” said union president Mike Mahar.

Mahar adds though the driver’s physical health is settling down, he’s sustained some emotional damage that needs time to heal.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 403-266-1234 or leave a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
