Calgary Flames’ Tyler Toffoli named Team Canada captain

It’s a proud moment for Calgary Flames forward Tyler Toffoli.

Hockey Canada says he’ll don the captain’s C for Canada at the upcoming IIHF World Championship.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to play for Canada at the world championship, and it is an honour to be named captain on a team with so many great players,” Toffoli said.

“Our entire team is excited to wear the Maple Leaf, and we will represent the country with pride as we compete for a gold medal.”

He’s one of three Calgary Flames on the Canadian leadership group, with Milan Lucic and MacKenzie Weegar serving as alternate captains.

This is Toffoli’s second time representing Canada at the Worlds. He was part of the gold medal-winning group back in 2015.

Toffoli is coming off a career season with the Flames, putting up 73 points in 82 games, and the 31-year-old led the team with 34 goals.

The Flames are also represented on the American roster, with Matt Coronato suiting up for the red, white and blue.

The tournament officially begins Friday when Canada faces Latvia.
