Advance voting opens for Alberta election May 23

As online voting registrations end on Wednesday, Albertans can get ready to cast their ballots as advance voting opens on May 23.

Advance voting takes place Tuesday through Saturday, May 27, between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m.

The days and hours of operation may vary for some locations, and Elections Alberta says every electoral division will have at least one location open for the full advance voting period.

Electors can vote at any advance voting location.

The option to vote in advance is available for those who are unable to vote in person. At the same time, students, anyone working away, and those travelling in Alberta can vote at any location using the vote anywhere service.

The election agency says voting locations are usually in malls, community centres, libraries, work camps, universities, and other public buildings to “provide electors with locations that are convenient to where they live, work, shop or travel.”

Elections Alberta says those that can’t vote in advance or on election day can also vote by mail or at their local returning office.

Voting locations and information about voting anywhere in advance can be found online.

With online registration ending May 17, there are still options for those who have never voted before or need to re-register.

Registering on the phone is an option by calling 1-877-422-8683. The provincial contact centre for Elections Alberta is open from 8:15 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends.

In-person registration is also an option until May 20, by visiting any advance or election day voting locations.

Around 700,000 Albertans voted in advance in the 2019 election, with 234,475 people voting using the vote anywhere service.

In 2019, “vote anywhere” ballots were counted by high-speed tabulators, and the results were delayed for three days.

Elections Alberta estimates between 700,000 to one million people will vote in advance in the 2023 election.

More information about registering to vote can be found online.
