Calgary Zoo giraffe dies unexpectedly

The Calgary Zoo/Wilder Institute says 12-year-old Emara was found dead in the African Savannah yard building Friday morning.

She celebrated her birthday on Thursday, and veterinarians say she has been with the zoo since 2016.

“Losing any of the animals we love and care for is heartbreaking, but it’s especially so when the passing is unexpected,” the zoo said in a statement.

The veterinary team says they don’t know her cause of death, but they will provide more information once an autopsy is completed.

According to the Center for Biological Diversity, giraffes typically live to 25 years in captivity.

In addition, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species lists giraffes as a vulnerable species, one step before the endangered status.

The IUCN says giraffes in the wild live to 10 years of age.

Meanwhile, Nabo and Moshi, two other giraffes, will be monitored by the Animal Care, Health and Welfare Team following the loss of their “habitat mate.”

“The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo’s giraffe tower is adored by staff, volunteers, members, donors, visitors and our online community from around the world,” the statement reads.

“We know this loss will be felt by many, especially Emara’s dedicated caregivers.”
