Drugs thought to be destined for the embattled Blood Tribe Reserve, which has been combatting a deadly drug crisis, have been seized following a traffic stop south of Calgary last week.
On Thursday, the Blood Tribe Police Service Drug Task Force and the RCMP Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) conducted a stop on Highway 2 near Aldersyde, where they took five people into custody.
During the stop, investigators found 66 grams of suspected fentanyl with a street value of more than $26,000, 33 grams of suspected methamphetamine with a street value of $6,600, and a small amount of cash.
Katie Natasha Eagle Speaker, 34, of the Blood Tribe, was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking fentanyl and methamphetamine.

Authorities say Eagle Speaker had allegedly been supplying the Blood Tribe with fentanyl and other controlled substances for some time. This prompted several southern Alberta agencies to bring their resources together in an effort to stop the funnelling of drugs onto the Blood Tribe and reduce the number of fatal overdoses related to fentanyl.
Eagle Speaker was remanded into custody and has a bail hearing scheduled for Monday.
