The Calgary film scene continues to be recognized on an international level.
The city was given a Global Production Award in Cannes for “location of the year” Monday.
The international award recognized the standing sets of John Scott Ranch, Albertina Farms and CL Ranch, all of which are located in Foothills County, south of the city.
The recognition is awarded to a location for its work across one or more productions.
Calgary was also among the finalists for the “city of film” award, given to a city whose work has helped deliver for TV and filmmakers, develop local skills and boost the local economy.
Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek commended the international recognition.
“Calgarians have come to know that our city is one of the top up-and-coming cities in the film and television sector. With this award and nomination, now the whole world knows it too,” she said in a statement.
“Film-friendly municipal policies, along with economic development initiatives, and an incredible talent pool will continue to cement Calgary as the location of choice for productions.”
The city said screen industries are an “important part of Calgary’s diversifying economy” and are “helping to build Calgary’s brand as an iconic city and a global creative hub.”

It added the Calgary Film Commission, the city, and industry partners have worked together to make the city “an attractive place for film, television, and digital media production.”
“Increasingly, we’re seeing productions come here because of our modern studios, skilled talent pool, post-production support, focus on sustainability and equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility across Calgary’s creative economy,” said Luke Azevedo, Calgary Film Commissioner, in a news release.
“This recognition is testament to Calgary being a leading destination for global, large-scale productions because we work together to create the right environment for their success.”
The Global Production Awards are held at the same time as the Cannes Film Festival and recognize the best locations, studios, creative crews, ideas and executions, the city said. The competition is judged by leading industry experts.
