Bail hearing delayed for man accused of sexually assaulting 5 Calgary women

A man accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting women in Calgary has had his bail hearing delayed until June.

Richard Robert Mantha, 59, now faces more than 20 offences that involve five women, including kidnapping, forcible confinement, “administering a noxious thing,” sexual assault, assault with a weapon, uttering threats, and pointing a firearm.

Investigators say he had three outstanding warrants for sexual assault, assault causing bodily harm, and failure to appear in court.

According to police, the women allege they were approached by a man, then drugged and taken to a rural property where they were physically and sexually assaulted.

In April, after a police investigation brought dozens of officers, forensic investigators, and cadaver dogs to an acreage east of Chestermere concluded, Mantha was arrested and charged.

Meanwhile, a bail hearing scheduled for Friday was adjourned due to what Mantha’s lawyer described as “evidentiary issues.”

Instead, the new hearing has been rescheduled for June 7.
