The countdown to summer is officially on, despite Calgary already getting a taste of warmer weather through the spring months.
Temperatures have hovered in the mid-to-high 20s over several days in recent weeks. According to CityNews Meteorologist Michael Kuss, May was one for the books, with average temperatures more than 5°C above seasonal.
“And that’s extreme, that’s really warm,” Kuss said.
“It’s been dry too. Although we’ve picked up 30 millimetres of rain, in May, normal is close to 60 millimetres, so we’re about half of that, and we’re coming off three straight months now — March, April, May — that have been incredibly dry.”

Dry conditions have contributed to an early wildfire season. As of Wednesday afternoon, 66 fires were burning in Alberta, 18 of them considered out of control.
Kuss says looking ahead, Calgary is set to see more seasonal temperatures in June. In addition, more rain is expected.
“Temperatures are going to drop off, at least for the next couple of weeks, and we have some precipitation in there as well,” he explained. “June is traditionally the wettest month, but most of that precipitation comes in the form of thunderstorms, really active weather. I’m not sure we see that activity as far as summer-time storms developing, at least through the next couple of weeks. We are going to see showers in there, but nothing as active as we traditionally see through June.”
Those Calgary thunderstorms also tend to go hand in hand with notorious hail storms, which Kuss says he isn’t seeing any indication of in the near future.
