Calgary Canada Day fireworks to launch from Stampede Park

After the exclusion of fireworks from this year’s Canada Day celebrations drew criticism — sparking a reversal of the decision — it has been announced the city’s fireworks will officially launch from Stampede Park.

Exact details of the timing are expected closer to the date, the city says.

However, viewing the fireworks onsite at Stampede Park won’t be possible due to the Stampede set-up.

The city initially announced plans last month to axe the traditional celebration, citing the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Immigration Act and cultural sensitivities around firework displays in relation to Truth and Reconciliation.

That decision sparked criticism and significant pushback, including a widely circulated petition.

    The city says a “variety of options” will be available for Calgarians to mark the occasion in a way that’s best for them.

    This will include diverse, educational, and inclusive programming to celebrate culture and community, it explains, including an “enhanced pyrotechnic show featuring a visually stunning display of light and sounds that will be launched from the main stage at Fort Calgary during the headliner act.”
