By Emily Marsten

The boil water advisory for three communities in southeast Calgary has lifted, according to the City of Calgary.

The advisory was issued on Thursday following a water main break and was in place for the Silverado, Belmont and Yorkville communities.

Now that the advisory has ended, the city says to take follow a few steps before using your water without boiling.

Faucets inside the house:

  • Turn on all taps and flush water lines for at least 20 minutes.
  • Wash tap aerators and screens in hot soapy water then disinfect them for ten minutes in a solution of one part bleach to nine parts water.

Fridges with water and ice dispensers, water coolers, and automatic ice makers:

  • Read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for flushing, cleaning, and sanitizing.

  • Run water for five minutes before using the water.

Hot water tanks: Drain and refill hot-water tanks that are set below 45ºC (normal setting is 60ºC).

Water softeners: Run water softeners through a regeneration cycle.

While water was restored to most homes impacted by the break, the advisory was put in place as a precautionary measure.
