Bars, restaurants can serve alcohol early during Stampede

It looks like Calgarians can hit the saloon bright and early once the 2023 Stampede starts, according to the Alberta Gaming Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC).

In a news release, the AGLC says bars, restaurants, and lounges in Calgary have the option to start liquor service at 8 a.m. during the annual event, which runs from July 7-16.

It states that the approval applies to all Class A, B, and C licences, which include bars, lounges, taprooms, and convention centres.

“Licensees do not have to apply for this particular extension, which is for early service only,” the AGLC said in a news release.

“Closing hours for liquor service are not changing, and all other rules guiding the service remain in effect. Licensees are expected to continue to offer service in a socially responsible way to ensure the safety of their patrons during these special hours.”

Meanwhile, for the parade on July 7, liquor licences can begin liquor service at 7 a.m.

And private event operators, if they obtain individual prior approval from the AGLC, may start serving at 6:30 a.m.

However, groups wishing to hold a special event must apply for a liquor license. Hours for special occasions are determined on a case-by-case basis.

The AGLC is asking Albertans to use their “DrinkSense” during Stampede festivities.
