Kitten found in the floors of a B.C. home

A kitten that was trapped under the floor in a Surrey home for four days is now free, thanks to the efforts of firefighters.

The BC SPCA says a Surrey resident reported a cat heard crying on Friday, but that no cat could be found.

“It sounded like very young cats in distress, and after about four days they gave us a call,” said Mark Vosper. “During that time, they’d been looking and they hadn’t seen another cat around. They hadn’t been able to get to where the kitten was, so they gave us a call.”

Vosper says when SPCA officers arrived and realized a kitten had somehow become trapped between the foundation and the framing of the home, the landlord agreed to use “whatever means necessary” to free the animal.

Two firefighters eventually came to help and proceeded to cut out portions of the home’s exterior, freeing the kitten after two and a half hours.

Although Vosper says it’s a mystery how the kitten got into this predicament, as they couldn’t find any holes or cavities in the side of the house.

“It was under a little bit of distress and we took it to the local vet. It had some abdominal pains and it was dehydrated, so it was put on some meds. It needed to be bottle fed as well because of the age and the size,” Vosper said.

He says the four to six-week-old kitten is now affectionately known as Lenna, which means lion’s strength in German, and is in foster care until she’s old enough for adoption. Vosper says the SPCA will make sure she’s “fully fit and healthy” before she goes to her forever home.
