With the start of summer and the “longest day of the year,” Calgary’s 17th Avenue Business Improvement Area (BIA) is celebrating the occasion with a free concert Wednesday.
“Summer on 17th” starts at 6 p.m. at Tomkins Park and is followed by free events throughout most days of the week.
Back by popular demand, #SummerOn17th is returning for its sophomore season along with several events. The rock-country duo Double Suede, along with Divas Opera, Shari Chaskin and Jon Day, Lost Decade, and the Little Red Ball Company, will take to the stage Wednesday to help kick off the three-month-long festival.
Tulene Steiestol, executive director of the BIA, says they first launched the summer fest last year to help showcase the 700+ businesses the area has to offer.
“It’s really important for us to have different programming for our community to come down to really enjoy the space,” she told CityNews.
“It’s inviting people to come down and enjoy our programming while also visiting our shops, services, and the really great cafes and restaurants that we have.”
There is a really “broad line-up,” which will include a multi-cultural day of the week, theatrical performances, two-hour concerts, free fitness classes, movies in the park, and many more events.
“Wouldn’t it be great to meet some girlfriends, work out in the park, and then go grab brunch and maybe put those calories back on with a boozy brunch,” Steiestol said with a laugh.
She says it’s essential to have events and programming for the community to gather.
