Calgary police, RCMP arrest youth in terrorism investigation

Calgary police, with the help of the RCMP Federal Policing investigation, arrested a youth in relation to a terrorism investigation.

Officers say the suspect was arrested on June 15, and then appeared in court under a section of the Criminal Code that allows for a peace bond if there’s fear the person may commit a terrorism offence.

A peace bond is used when an individual “appears likely to commit a criminal offence, but there are no reasonable grounds to believe that an offence has actually been committed.”

If granted, the bond would be in effect for up to a year or, if there’s a previous terrorism conviction, up to five years.

Mounties say the youth has been released from custody with several conditions and is awaiting a future court appearance.

The Youth Criminal Justice Act prevents further information about the individual from being released.

In addition, Mounties refused to comment further on the case as the investigation is ongoing.

However, they say this incident is linked to the arrest of 20-year-old Calgary man Zakarya Rida Hussein, which happened on the same day as the youth’s arrest.

He faces two counts of facilitating a terrorist activity and two counts of participating in or contributing to an activity of a terrorist group.

According to court documents obtained by CityNews, Hussein posted a TikTok that “knowingly facilitated a terrorist activity.”

The documents also show that between June 1 and June 15, he allegedly possessed and prepared explosive-making instructions that would have knowingly facilitated or contributed to terrorist activity.

“The RCMP is committed to working in partnership with both domestic and foreign agencies to keep Canadians safe and secure and protect Canadian interests at home and abroad,” police said in a news release.
