Water main break opens up northwest Calgary road

A water main break which caused a northwest asphalt roadway to collapse caused problems for motorists Tuesday.

Calls to the CityNews traffic centre this morning indicated a sinkhole had opened up on eastbound 64 Avenue, between 4 Street and Centre Street.

As a result, eastbound lanes were closed, and drivers were directed into westbound lanes which caused delays.

It has been determined a water main break was responsible for the hole. A resident of the area said emergency water is place for the time being, after water to their apartment block was initially stopped.

Traffic re-routing will be in place for several days as the city works to fix the problem.
