Calgary Heritage elects Conservative MP in by-election

Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives coasted to victory in Calgary Heritage Monday, in a by-election called to replace another Tory who left his post last year.

Conservative candidate Shuv Majumdar captured 15,803 votes – 65.5 per cent of the total.

“I’ve seen the hurt, I’ve seen the pain, I’ve seen the tears well up in the eyes of our neighbours, I’ve seen their throats choke with the pressure of their day-to-day lives,” Majumdar said to a group of supporters the night of the vote. “I’ve seen you. You’re heard. And we’re going to fix this country for you”

In a distant second was the Liberal candidate Elliot Weinstein, who captured 14.4 per cent of the vote.

Elections Canada reports the voter turnout was low — just 28.8 per cent of registered voters showed up to the ballot box.

Also on the ballot was Kelly Lorencz with the People’s Party of Canada, Ravenmoon Crocker with the Green Party, Larry R. Heather with the Christian Heritage Party, Dan Irving with the Maverick Party, and Donovan Eckstrom who was unaffiliated. They placed third, fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively.

The newly elected MP is a longtime Conservative staffer, who won the party’s nomination in March.

Majumdar previously served as a policy advisor to former Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

A portion of Calgary Heritage was part of the old Calgary Southwest riding, which was held by Harper until his retirement.

The seat was most recently held by Conservative MP Bob Benzen who announced his retirement from politics in October.
