Arrest made after fire at Mewata Armoury

One person has been arrested following a fire at Mewata Armoury in downtown Calgary, the city’s fire department says.

Crews say they were called to a fire at 7 a.m. at the reserve base on 11 Street and 8 Avenue SW.

Upon arrival, black smoke was seen coming from the roof of the building.

Paul Frederick, Calgary Fire Department Battalion Chief, says firefighters found several smaller fires.

“Turns out that they were started by an individual there who is now in the custody of Calgary Police Service,” he told CityNews.

He explains arson investigators were on the scene trying to figure out the cause of the fire.

In addition, he adds the building suffered around $20,000 worth of damage.

Crews had 11 Street closed for a short period while they worked.

No further information has been released.
