Calgary could see severe thunderstorms Monday: ECCC

Calgary could see severe thunderstorms Monday afternoon, according to an alert issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).

The severe thunderstorm watch was issued for the city Monday morning, saying conditions are favourable for the development of severe storms that may be capable of produce strong wind gusts, large hail, and heavy rain.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop along the foothills early in the afternoon and move to the east.

Large hail can damage property and cause injury, ECCC says, adding that strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.

It also cautions that severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
