Three dead after driving into irrigation canal: Redcliff RCMP

Mounties in Redcliff say three people have died after driving into an irrigation canal in southern Alberta.

They say calls came in at around 1 a.m. Monday for a report of a vehicle that drove off the road and into the St. Mary’s Irrigation District canal at Highway 523 and Range Road 73 in Cypress County by Medicine Hat.

Four people were in the vehicle, and one was able to get out and get help from a nearby home, along with calling 911, police say.

When Mounties, EMS, and the Medicine Hat Fire Department Aquatic Rescue arrived, they found the vehicle “submerged on its roof.”

Officers say water rescue entered the water and found the three occupants still inside the vehicle.

However, they declared the three, a 28-year-old Medicine Hat man, a 21-year-old woman from Swift Current, Sask., and a 21-year-old woman also from Medicine Hat, dead at the scene.

RCMP say its collision reconstructionist attended the scene and the investigation is ongoing.

No further details are being released.
