Calgary lost at least $500,000 in scrapped Commonwealth Games bid: report

By Dione Wearmouth

A report heading to Calgary City Council Tuesday shows the city lost a hefty amount of cash as a result of the 2030 Commonwealth Games bid being thwarted by the province.

Prior to the bid being scrapped in August, the city had already dropped $500,000 into the bid.

These funds went to the 2023 Commonwealth Games Bid Corporation.

A total of $1 million had been allocated to support the bid, and the report says the other $500,000 will remain in the fiscal stability reserve, and will require council approval prior to being used.

The report adds that Calgary is well-positioned to contribute to or host large multi-sport events and will continue to explore similar opportunities in the future.
