Canada-wide warrant issued for man who removed ankle bracelet ahead of sentencing for Calgary murder

A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for a man wanted by Calgary police in connection to a 2020 manslaughter case.

Calgary police say before his sentencing date on March 16, 2023, Joseph Chlala, removed the ankle bracelet that was issued as part of his bail conditions.

He then failed to appear in court and has not been seen since.

Chlala is still wanted by Calgary investigators in connection to this incident.

The 22-year-old man was charged with manslaughter with a firearm in the 2020 death of Christian Navos, who was killed in Legacy in what police determined to be a drug dispute.

However, the Canada-wide warrant issued Thursday also names Chlala as a suspect in the June 14, 2023 homicide of 21-year-old Osama Ali, which happened in Edmonton.

“While he could be anywhere, we understand he has connections in Edmonton, Calgary and Ottawa so we’re asking citizens to keep a mindful eye out for him,” Edmonton Homicide Acting Staff Sergeant Jared Buhler said in a press release. “We believe Chlala has access to weapons, so citizens are reminded not to approach him if seen, but to contact police immediately.”

Chlala is described as 5’5″ with a heavy build, brown hair and green eyes.
