43rd annual Terry Fox Run in Calgary this Sunday

Over 100 Calgary teams are set to run in the 43rd annual Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research on Sunday.

The annual nationwide event is a legacy to Fox’s Marathon of Hope, which took place in 1980 to bring awareness to Cancer and to raise money for cancer research after he was diagnosed in 1977.

He ran nearly 5,500 kilometres for 143 days — which amounts to a full marathon each day at 42 km.

However, after running from Newfoundland to Ontario, Fox ended his journey on Sept. 1, 1980. He was forced to stop after cancer was found in his lungs.

As of Saturday afternoon, there are 103 teams in this year’s event, with members ranging from one person to 90 people. In addition, as of publishing, Calgary’s run has raised nearly $200,000 as it nears its $225,000 goal.

The 3.3 km loop goes along the river behind Fort Calgary and through St. Patrick’s Island. They also say to prepare for the optional “Mound Terry Fox’ climb.”

Registration starts at 9 a.m., with the run starting at 10 a.m. and lasting until 12 p.m.
