Calgary NW fire displaces 11, one injured in escape

Flames were seen sprouting from a home in the city’s northwest early Sunday morning as Calgary firefighters rushed to put it out.

The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) responded to the two-alarm fire at the 100 block of Evansbrooke Way at around 2 p.m. that displaced 11 people and injured one.

The fire was declared a two-alarm due to the “significant” amount of fire and the flames spreading to the homes on both sides of the source home.

Everyone inside the home was evacuated before work was done to extinguish the fire.

Firefighters say water was doused on the flames with large diameter hoses, and aerial ladders were used to fight the flames. In total, around 17 apparatus were on the scene, along with 41 firefighters.

The injured individual suffered second-degree burns while evacuating and was taken to hospital.

Meanwhile, investigators are determining the cause and origin of the fire.

“The Calgary Fire Department would like to remind all Calgarians to plan at least two different escape routes out of your home in case of a fire and have a meeting place to confirm all members are out,” a news release reads.

“In addition, ensure you have working smoke alarms on all levels of your home.”

As of Sunday before noon, CFD says crews will be on the scene throughout the morning to “ensure all hot spots are extinguished and there is no further fire extension.”
