Power outage causes C-Train delays

Downtown Calgary commuters are faced delays Monday morning due to issues that shut down portions of the Red and Blue C-Train lines.

Calgary Transit posted to X, formerly Twitter, at 7:30 a.m. explaining that both lines were unable to move through 7 Avenue through the downtown core westbound or eastbound due to “mechanical [issues].”

Shuttle buses were in the process of being arranged to get people where they need to go.

Calgary Transit said the westbound shuttle can be boarded on 6 Avenue, while the eastbound shuttle can be caught on 9 Avenue.

In an update, the city said buses are in place between Bridgeland and Sunalta Stations on the Blue Line and Victoria Park/Stampede and Sunnyside Stations on the Red Line.

Just before 9 a.m., Calgary Transit posted to X that C-Train service along 7 Avenue had resumed.

Later Monday morning, Calgary Transit provided an update to CityNews, saying it was actually a power outage around 7:20 a.m. that caused the issues.

“Power was restored by 8:30 a.m., but the two CTrains that were on [7 Avenue] needed to be inspected before they were allowed to run again,” representative Amanda Bradley said in a statement.

“When an unplanned disruption happens on the CTrain, we arrange for shuttle replacement service as quickly as we can,” she continued. “In order to do that, we have to take buses from other routes throughout the city. It can take some time to adjust those routes and to move those buses downtown.”

Transit said it is still looking into the cause of the outage.
