Calgary Transit station named City Hall/Bow Valley College

Calgary Transit has officially renamed the City Hall Station on 1 Street and Stephen Avenue SE going west the City Hall/Bow Valley College Station.

Calgary Transit has officially renamed the City Hall Station on 1 Street and Stephen Avenue SE going west the City Hall/Bow Valley College Station.

In an announcement Tuesday, the city says the name change will be effective as of Tuesday and will improve wayfinding and recognize Bow Valley College as a city landmark.

“Bow Valley College has always been an integral player in the vitality of our downtown,” Mayor Jyoti Gondek said in a news release.

“This change is an opportunity to make our transit system more intuitive not only for people travelling to City Hall but for the thousands of students that have chosen to pursue greater opportunities through education at this innovative post-secondary institution.”

Dr. Misheck Mwaba, the president and CEO of Bow Valley College, says the renaming validates the college’s role in the community and “significantly enhances the college’s visibility, aiding our mission to open doors, remove barriers, and provide opportunities.”

A 2019 Bow Valley College survey on commuting behaviour says 89 per cent of students and 55 staff at the school use transit.

The city says this follows other post-secondary institutions in the city with nearby Transit access, like SAIT, Alberta University of the Arts, and the University of Calgary, marking a relationship between the institutions.

The name is expected to appear in website updates, and riders will see new station signage, interior train signage, and system maps, including on Google Maps, as of Sept. 19.
