Cavalry FC crowned regular season champions, earning historic first trophy

Calgary-based Cavalry FC clinched the 2023 Canadian Premier League (CPL) regular season title Saturday.

The football club defeated York United FC 1-0 that night and needed Pacific FC to lose or draw against Forge later Saturday to clinch the title.

Cavalry has tallied 49 points this season, and with only two games remaining for every other team, no other team can catch them.

In 26 games, the team garnered a 14-7-5 record, scoring 41 goals and conceding 26.

This is the second time the team has finished top of the regular season, first doing so in 2019 — the league’s inaugural season.

In a social media post Sunday, Cavalry general manager and coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. commended his team.

“There are few superlatives to describe what this club, these players, our staff, this city, our fans & our ownership mean to me,” he wrote. “Remarkable is the best word I can find right now.

“To be able to help build something that makes a difference in their lives is all I’ve ever wanted.”

Cavalry will be awarded the league’s newest trophy — the CPL Shield — on the last day of the regular season, Saturday, Oct. 7.

Thursday the CPL unveiled the CPL Shield, which will be handed out to the winner of the regular season for the first time in 2023.

The league also noted that they would be replacing the playoff trophy — the North Star Shield — with the North Star Cup.

In addition to the hardware, the Cavs also secured their first ever spot in international competition.

As the 2023 regular season winner, the Cavalry locked a spot in the 2024 CONCACAF Champions League, alongside Canadian Championship winner Vancouver Whitecaps, and Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami.

The 2023 CPL playoff winner, will also earn a spot to the Champions League.
